Our “Meet the Counselor” series highlights the amazing individuals who make a difference at the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford. Meet Leonardo Rotondano, Club Counselor & Climb Instructor. Although Leo has been with the club for less than a year, he has already made a profound impact on the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford. Originally from Brazil, Leo grew up in São Paulo, a large city similar to Manhattan. With a background in Physical Education and athletic training, Leo has seamlessly transitioned to nurturing young minds through the thrill of rock climbing.
What inspired you to become a counselor at the Boys and Girls Club?
Transitioning from a role in another rock climbing gym in Stamford, I discovered an opening at the Club to manage their new rock climbing wall. With a background in instructing various kids’ activities, such as climbing and swimming, I saw this as an opportunity to continue to explore my passion for climbing while passing on life lessons to the next generation.
Tell us a little about your role here and the types of clubs or programs you are involved with.
As the primary instructor for the Rock Climbing Wall, I teach youth safe equipment usage and guide them through the physical and mental challenges of climbing. When we aren’t using the Rock Climbing Wall, I act as a Club Counselor, supporting various activities around the club, including the Chess Club and the ALTA (Aspiring Leadership Through Action) Program.
What do you enjoy most about working with children and youth?
Children have a refreshing openness to new ideas, often free from preconceptions that sometimes tie us adults down, which is important when trying something like climbing. They always remind me to smile more and have fun!
What is your favorite place to be at the Club?
The Rock Wall! Providing youth with the opportunity to explore climbing, many for the first time, is very rewarding. Climbing is a physical and mental challenge, promoting an active lifestyle and boosting self-confidence. I encourage everyone to try it!
What is one thing that you wish more people knew about the Club?
I wish more people knew about the diverse programs and opportunities the Club offers. Beyond being a safe place for kids to “hang out,” the Club provides countless enriching activities like arts, many different sports, tutoring, chess and so much more. Further, the Club has such dedicated counselors and staff, shout out to Jerred, Sedera, James, and many others who play a vital role in shaping these kids into their best selves.
